Why won't it restart after a power outage?

The short answer

Most often the circuit never came back: the breaker tripped, or the outlet behind the cabinet lost its feed. Work the breaker first. If the panel stays dark with power proven at the socket, ring Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972.

A stainless cabinet set into pale oak joinery with its lower grille off, one hand holding a lit test probe and the other a yellow multimeter at the compressor and copper lines inside, tools on a grey towel on the floor. Labelled on the photograph: machine bay, grille off, multimeter, cabinet front.

Before you call

  1. Find the breaker for the kitchen refrigeration circuit, switch it off for ten seconds, then switch it firmly back on.
  2. If the outlet is reachable, plug a lamp or a phone charger into it and see whether the socket itself has power.
  3. Check whether anything else on that circuit died with it — a disposal, an outlet by the sink, a GFCI that needs resetting.
  4. Look at the control panel with the door open. Sub-Zero lists Sabbath mode as one reason a live unit looks like a dead one.
  5. Keep the doors shut while you work. An unopened cabinet holds its cold far longer than one you keep checking.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the breaker holds, the socket is proven live, and the panel is still blank.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A tripped or half-seated breaker

The handle sits between on and off, and a firm off-then-on cycle brings the panel straight back.

  • A damaged electronic control

The surge as the supply came back took the board out; the circuit is live, the cabinet is not.

  • A failed start component

Power reaches the machine bay and the lights work, but nothing in the compartment below ever starts up.

When it is worth a visit

Once the breaker holds and the socket is proven live, whatever is wrong sits inside the cabinet and there is nothing further to try from the kitchen. Have the panel in front of you when you ring, and say whether it shows anything at all — a blank display and a silent compartment point at different parts.

What happens in the seconds the power returns

A supply that drops and returns does not return cleanly. It flickers, dips and settles, and the electronics in a built-in are the part least able to shrug that off. Most cabinets simply carry on. The ones that do not have usually taken the hit at the board, or the house circuit has protected itself and tripped.

Follow-up questions

How long will the food last while the power is off?

Sub-Zero's own figure is three hours in an empty cabinet before the fridge side passes 45°F and the freezer side passes 20°F; a full one holds longer. Anything chilled that has reached 42°F goes in the bin, and frozen food that has risen past 20°F should not go back in.

Should I unplug it before a planned outage?

Sub-Zero says a unit may be switched off ahead of a scheduled cut so that it is not exposed to the fluctuation when supply returns. Switch it off at the control rather than hauling the cabinet out of its run, and leave the doors closed throughout.

The lights came on but nothing is getting cold. Is that one fault or two?

One fault, almost always. Lights mean the board has power; cold means the compartment below is running. When one returns and the other does not, the break is past the supply and inside the machinery. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver takes that booking on (303) 729-0972.
