What should I check after weeks away?

The short answer

Read it before you unpack. The frost pattern in the freezer, any smell, water on the floor and what the panel shows will together say whether it ran the whole time. Where they do not add up, ring Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972.

A yellow-cased multimeter held in one hand and a red probe in the other at a large green circuit board behind the lower panel of a twin-door stainless cabinet, a lidded parts organiser on the floor at the left. Labelled on the photograph: circuit board, probe at a pin, parts organiser.

Before you call

  1. Look at the floor and the plinth before you open anything. A dried tide mark says the cabinet lost its cold and found it again.
  2. Open the freezer and look at the packets rather than the walls. Blocks that slumped against each other and set that way give away an interruption.
  3. Smell the fridge section with the door wide open for a moment. A closed cabinet concentrates anything that went off inside it.
  4. Check the panel reads what you left it reading, and that nothing on it has reset itself while you were away.
  5. Pull the grille and look at the condenser. Weeks of still air in a shut-up house settle a surprising amount of dust on it.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the food thawed and refroze while you were away, or the smell survives a clean.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A short interruption you missed

Frozen blocks have settled flat and refrozen, the panel reads normally now, and nothing else looks wrong at all.

  • A drain that dried out

Weeks with the door shut make very little meltwater, debris in the trough sets hard, and the first busy week floods it.

    Quoted after the diagnosis

  • An odour that has set in

The cabinet ran the whole time but something inside it did not, and a shut door drove the smell into the plastic.

When it is worth a visit

If anything thawed, do not trust the cabinet on the strength of one good day — a unit that lost its cold once and picked it up again can do it again. The same goes for a smell that outlasts a full clean, because that one is rarely on the shelves.

Reading the freezer before you empty it

The freezer is the honest witness. A compartment that held the whole time has packets still the shape they were bagged in, and whatever frost there is sits evenly. A compartment that lost its cold and got it back has packets slumped against each other and set that way, ice welded into the base of the drawer, and cardboard gone soft and stiff again. Look at that before you throw anything out, because it decides whether this is a shopping problem or a repair.

Follow-up questions

Should I switch it off while the house is empty?

Only for a long absence, and only properly. Sub-Zero's shutdown routine is to power the unit down, leave the doors open until it warms to room temperature, wipe the inside dry, then close them. Half-doing it leaves damp in a sealed box, which is how a fortnight becomes a smell.

The house was cold while we were away. Does that matter?

It can. The published operating window for an indoor Sub-Zero starts at 60°F, and a house turned right down for the winter can sit below it. If the room actually reached freezing, the unit needs the manufacturer's winterising routine rather than simply being left switched on.

Everything looks fine. Do I need to do anything else?

Give it a week of normal use before you decide. A cabinet coasting on a closed door is not being asked for much; the real test is a full fridge and a door that opens all day. If it slips then, Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver is on (303) 729-0972.
