Why is it not right since it was moved?

The short answer

Usually the twenty-four hours. Sub-Zero says a unit tilted in any direction, even briefly, must stand upright for a full day before it is plugged back in. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver checks the rest — (303) 729-0972.

$89 service call, credited against the repair.

A cabinet pulled out onto the floor with its rear panel off and a hand fitting a yellow hose at the compressor, a filter-drier in copper above it and a cylinder, manifold set and leak detector on a quilted blanket. Labelled on the photograph: compressor, charging hose, leak detector.

Before you call

  1. Ask whoever moved it whether it went on its side or its back at any point, and for how long it then stood.
  2. If it was tilted and then switched on straight away, shut it off and leave it standing upright for twenty-four hours.
  3. Look along the top and the sides for a gap that was not there before. A cabinet put back off level shows at the doors.
  4. Take the grille off and check nothing was pinched, folded or left behind the cabinet when it was pushed back in.
  5. Give it a full day of running before you judge it. A cabinet restarted into a warm, full interior takes time to pull down.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if it stood upright a full day, has run a day since, and still is not holding.

What it usually turns out to be

  • Compressor oil that has shifted

It was tilted and powered up too soon, and the cabinet will not pull down properly however long it runs.

  • A cabinet standing out of level

Doors that used to close themselves now swing or hang, and the drain route inside no longer falls the way it should.

  • Something knocked in the move

A pipe, a fan blade or a bracket was touched in transit, and the noise the cabinet makes is not the one it made before.

    Quoted after the diagnosis

  • A sealed system disturbed

The rarest of the four, and the one nothing in the kitchen will show you; it is found on gauges at the machine bay.

When it is worth a visit

A day upright and a day running is the whole of what waiting can do. After that, a cabinet that still will not hold is telling you the move cost it something, and the longer it labours the more that costs. Say how it travelled when you book.

Why standing it up for a day is not superstition

A sealed refrigeration system carries oil along with the refrigerant, and that oil belongs in the compressor at the bottom. Lay the cabinet over, even for the minute it takes to get through a doorway, and some of it travels into pipework that was never meant to hold it. Switch on before it has found its way back, and the compressor starts its life in the new kitchen short of the one thing that keeps it alive. Sub-Zero’s answer is a day upright, every time.

Follow-up questions

Does the twenty-four hours apply if it was only tipped for a second?

Yes. Sub-Zero's instruction is to wait the full day whatever the angle and however brief the tilt, because compressor oil can move out of place in moments. Powering up before it has settled back is what turns a careful move into a cooling fault.

Which way should a Sub-Zero be laid down if it has to be?

On its back, or on the side that is to your left as you face the front, which is where the sealed system sits. An appliance dolly with a platform running the full width protects what is underneath. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver will talk it through on (303) 729-0972.

It was moved months ago and only started playing up now. Is that related?

It can be. A unit run on shifted oil, or one standing slightly out of level, does not fail on the day — it wears at whatever is carrying the extra load, and the first sign is often a noise, or a drain that stops keeping up.
