Why is my Sub-Zero humming so loudly?

The short answer

Humming appears on Sub-Zero's own list of ordinary running sounds, so what matters is whether yours grew louder. A hum that changed usually points at the condenser or a fan motor. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver traces it on the first visit — (303) 729-0972.

A condenser coil furred grey with lint behind the removed lower grille of a dark cabinet, the condenser fan in its housing to the left and a brush and vacuum hose waiting on the floor. Labelled on the photograph: condenser coil under lint, condenser fan, brush.

Before you call

  1. Open every door and drawer at once. If the hum drops away while they are open, it is a fan inside rather than the machinery below.
  2. Close one compartment at a time and listen after each. Whichever one brings the hum back is the section worth naming on the phone.
  3. Shine a torch through the lower grille at the coil behind it. Sub-Zero's published cleaning interval runs from six months to a year.
  4. Check that nothing inside is pressed up against a rear vent, since a blocked air path is itself listed as a noise cause.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the hum comes with a burning odour, or if it rose steadily over a few weeks.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A condenser packed with lint

The noise builds over months rather than starting one morning, the sides feel warmer than they did, and the coil is grey under a torch.

  • A fan motor on the way out

The hum has a note to it, it changes when you open the doors, and it is loudest from one compartment.

  • Normal running in a quiet room

Nothing changed at the appliance; an open plan, a hard floor or a still night simply let you hear what was always there.

When it is worth a visit

If the hum survives a clean coil and does not move when the doors open, the noise is coming from the machinery below and a technician needs to hear it running. Book that visit sooner if the sound has been climbing week by week.

There is a longer version of this one in the guides: read it through.

Loud, or only louder?

Nearly every noise fault begins as a sound you had lived with quite happily, turned up. So the useful question is not how loud the hum is, but when it changed, and it pays to have that answer ready.

Three things in a built-in can hum. The compressor sits in the bay at the bottom, the fan that pulls air across the coil sits beside it, and another fan moves air round the food behind the rear wall inside. Opening the doors separates them, because only the ones inside stop.

Dust settles the rest of it around here. Cottonwood fluff and dry grit reach the coil through the grille all summer, and a matted coil keeps the machinery working for longer stretches to hold the same temperature — which is a longer hum, hour after hour.

Follow-up questions

Is a hum I can hear from the next room a fault?

Not on its own. Sub-Zero treats humming as part of ordinary operation, and an open plan kitchen with hard surfaces carries it further than a closed one would. What turns a hum into a fault is change: it arrived, it grew, or it now has a rasp in it.

Will cleaning the condenser quieten it down?

Often, yes. A coil buried under dust makes the system work in longer stretches and the fan push against the blockage, and both of those are audible. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver clears the coil as part of a visit for noise, so you find out on the day — (303) 729-0972.

Could the noise be coming from the compressor?

It can, and that is the one an owner cannot check. The manufacturer's troubleshooting works in a fixed order: establish whether a fan is responsible, clean the condenser if the noise is new or getting louder, and only then look at the sealed side.

Talk to someone

Still doing it after the checks?

Say what changed and in what order, and the technician packs for that fault rather than for a guess. Technicians work 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, any day of the week, and the line takes a call 24/7.
