Doors and panels · Denver

Why are the panels out of line after the remodel?

The short answer

Almost always the joinery around it. New fronts, new filler strips and a new floor height change what the door lines up against, while the cabinet itself has not moved at all. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver checks the door against the opening — (303) 729-0972.

A glass-door wine cabinet with its lower access panel removed, a work light shining on the compressor and copper lines inside the bay, and a bagged parts kit, screwdriver, three nut drivers and a multimeter laid out on a towel below. Labelled on the photograph: compressor, work light, parts kit, still bagged.

Before you call

  1. Stand back and read the reveal round each front: even gaps, or a wedge that widens one way?
  2. Check whether the new front sits flush with the drawer beneath it and with the run alongside.
  3. Look for a panel that has slipped on its mounting brackets rather than a door hanging low.
  4. See whether the case still sits level now the new floor has gone in under it.
  5. Open every front in the run and watch for one clipping the joinery beside it.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if a front now catches the joinery either side, or will not clear the run.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A front hung slightly off

Custom panels mount to brackets on the door, and one set a fraction high reads as a crooked appliance when the appliance is perfectly straight.

  • New flooring under the case

A built-in levelled to the old floor sits differently on the new one, and every gap above it moves by the same amount.

  • A front made in several pieces

The maker allows a panel built up from more than one board, but the boards need backer material behind them or they drift out of line.

  • Filler strips pressing the case

Joinery squeezed tight against the sides can hold a door from swinging clear, and it shows as rubbing that only started once the fitters left.

When it is worth a visit

Once the fronts are on and the gaps are wrong, someone has to decide whether the door moved or the joinery did. A cabinet door can be set in and out and tilted; a panel simply hung high is the joiner's to move. One look at the reveal sorts which it is.

What is adjustable, and what is not

Two separate things get called panel alignment, and mixing them up is how a kitchen ends up with two trades blaming each other. The first is where the appliance door sits in its opening, which the cabinet itself controls and a technician can move within a set range. The second is where the timber front sits on that door, which is brackets and screws and belongs to whoever hung it.

The reveal tells you which one you are looking at. A door out of place takes its panel with it, so the gap round the whole front changes together. A panel out of place leaves the door swinging as sweetly as ever and only looks wrong against its neighbours. Worth settling that before anyone starts loosening anything.

Follow-up questions

Who should sort it out, the joiner or the appliance technician?

Whichever of them owns the part that moved. If the door is square in its opening and the panel is not square on the door, that is joinery. If the gaps round the case itself have changed, the cabinet is off level or the door needs resetting. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver will say which.

Can any amount of misalignment be adjusted out?

No, and it is worth knowing before the argument starts. A door has a limited range in and out and in tilt, meant to absorb settlement rather than an opening built to the wrong width. Where the opening is wrong, the adjustment runs out and the fronts have to be rehung.

Everything lined up before the worktop went on. What changed?

Usually the height of things above the floor. A thicker counter, a new substrate or packers under the case all shift where the cabinet sits, and the doors either side were fitted to the old line. The appliance is the one front in the run nobody can trim to fit.

Talk to someone

Still doing it after the checks?

Say what changed and in what order, and the technician packs for that fault rather than for a guess. Technicians work 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, any day of the week, and the line takes a call 24/7.
