Why won't the drawer close flush?

The short answer

Nearly always something behind the basket, a basket sitting the wrong way round, or a closer that has folded out of position. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver checks the runners and the closer on the visit — (303) 729-0972.

A stainless cabinet set into pale oak joinery with its lower grille off, one hand holding a lit test probe and the other a yellow multimeter at the compressor and copper lines inside, tools on a grey towel on the floor. Labelled on the photograph: cabinet front, machine bay, grille off, multimeter.

Before you call

  1. Draw the basket out to its full extension, then push it home and watch exactly where it stops.
  2. Look behind the baskets for a packet that has worked its way to the back of the compartment.
  3. Lift the lower basket out and find its straight edge: that edge belongs at the front.
  4. Check the retainers holding the basket for anything loose, cracked or missing altogether.
  5. Do not shove it shut; the closer does the last stretch, and force bends what is already bent.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if it still stands proud with the baskets out and nothing at all behind them.

What it usually turns out to be

  • Food behind the basket

The drawer travels normally until the last inch, then stops against something that never shows itself from the front.

  • A basket in back to front

The lower basket has one straight edge and one indented, and turned around it fouls on the way in every time.

  • A closer flipped or broken

The claw that should catch the drawer and draw it home has folded back or snapped, so the last part of the travel simply never happens.

  • Frost along the runners

A front that has been leaking leaves ice on the rails, and the drawer rides up over it instead of sliding the whole way.

When it is worth a visit

When the baskets are out, the retainers are sound and it still will not sit flush, the closer or the rails have taken damage and that is a parts visit. The same if the front stands proud at one side only, which is alignment rather than obstruction.

Flush is the last inch of the travel

Most of a drawer’s journey is easy and tells you nothing. The rails are long, the basket is heavy when it is full, and everything feels normal until the very end. What decides whether the front finishes level with the joinery is that last inch, and almost nothing in the last inch is under your hand: the closer takes over, pulls the drawer in against the seal and holds it there.

Which is why forcing a drawer is such a poor idea. If the closer has folded back or the rail has taken a knock, pushing harder bends the part that was going to be straightened, and a mechanism that could have been reset becomes one to replace. Take the baskets out, look at the back of the compartment, and stop there.

Follow-up questions

Is a proud drawer the same problem as a door that will not shut?

They rhyme without being the same thing. A door swings on hinges and is closed by a magnet; a drawer rides on rails and is pulled the last stretch by a closer. That is why the checks differ: on a drawer you look behind and underneath before you go near the seal.

Can I take the baskets out myself?

Yes, and it is the first thing to do. They lift clear, and with them gone you can see whether anything has dropped behind, whether the retainers are intact and whether the rails are clean. Put the lower one back with its straight edge facing you.

It closes, but frost keeps forming inside. Why?

Because flush and sealed are two different states. A drawer can look shut and still leave a hairline gap that air works through, and the moisture it carries freezes on the first cold surface. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver checks the seal line as well as the travel, on (303) 729-0972.

Still doing it after the checks?

Say what changed and in what order, and the technician packs for that fault rather than for a guess. Technicians work 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, any day of the week, and the line takes a call 24/7.
