Ice Maker Problems After a Denver Water Lead Line Replacement: The Flush-and-Filter Sequence for Highland

An ice maker that quits a week after Denver Water's crew leaves your block is a supply-side event, not a failed module. Flush the branch line, fit a new cartridge, clear the inlet screen and check fill volume — in that order — in Highland, Capitol Hill, Cherry Creek and Washington Park.

What Denver actually does differently

Denver Water is fifteen years into a Lead Reduction Program that replaces customer-owned lead service lines at no direct charge to the homeowner. The utility estimates 60,000 to 64,000 properties may still have one, and reports more than 25,000 replaced since the programme launched in 2020. Houses built before 1951 are the likeliest candidates.

That eligibility rule is why this reads as a neighbourhood story rather than a general one. The brick ranches of Cherry Creek, the Denver Squares and bungalows around Washington Park, the Victorian cottages of Highland and the divided mansions of Capitol Hill are overwhelmingly pre-1951 stock, so these four addresses turn up in the programme far more often than newer parts of the city do.

Enrolled households are sent Brita Longlast pitchers and told to use filtered water until six months after their own line has been swapped. Almost everyone reads that as an instruction about drinking glasses. It is also, quietly, an instruction about everything plumbed downstream of the meter — and in a house with built-in refrigeration, that is one appliance in particular.

How that reaches the appliance

A line replacement is a shutdown followed by a re-pressurisation. The branch feeding the house goes dead while the crew works, then the supply comes back hard. That surge lifts rust, old solder scale and loose pipe debris off the inside of the plumbing and pushes it towards the fixtures — and the narrowest passages in the building are inside the refrigeration, not under the sink.

A built-in Sub-Zero takes its water through a quarter-inch fill tube behind a solenoid valve with a fine mesh screen at its inlet, then through a cartridge. Grit that a bath tap passes without noticing gets stopped there. Because the cartridge absorbs the first of it, the cabinet usually behaves for a few days and then starts misbehaving in the following week, which is exactly why nobody connects the two events.

You do not need the crew to have been at your own kerb, either. A main-side repair three doors up the block disturbs the same water, and the Capitol Hill and Highland grids are dense enough that one job touches a lot of houses.

What tends to give first

In order: the filter cartridge, then the inlet valve screen, then the fill tube, then the owner’s confidence in the ice maker. The failures arrive in that sequence because each one is finer than the last, and each stage starves the stage behind it of water rather than stopping it outright.

A loaded cartridge drops flow first. The mould still gets a fill signal, still runs its cycle, but receives less water than the harvest was designed around, so cubes come out short, hollow-backed or fused into thin slabs that crumble in the glass. A partially blocked inlet screen does the same thing more abruptly. And a short fill is what freezes a fill tube: too little water to reach the mould cleanly, enough to sit in the tube and set, after which the next cycle backs up over the front of the mould and you get the sheet of ice that owners photograph and send us.

Left alone through that sequence, the module gets condemned for a supply problem it never had. The replacement works for a fortnight and then does the same thing, because the debris is still sitting where it landed.

What you can check yourself

Work it in the order the water travels. If you know the crew is coming, switch the ice maker off at the control panel first and close the shutoff serving the refrigerator, so the surge never reaches the valve at all.

Once the water is back on, open the widest cold tap you have — a bath tap, not the kitchen aerator, which will simply block — and run it until it comes clear. Then open the appliance shutoff, pull the cartridge, fit a new one, and run water through the dispenser until it stops carrying colour or air. Turn the ice maker back on, discard the first two or three harvests, and give it a full day before judging cube size. A single good batch after twenty-four hours means the flush did its job.

Two things to leave alone: the mesh screen inside the inlet valve, which sits behind a live water connection, and the fill tube heater if the tube has already frozen solid. Both are quick on a visit and expensive to get wrong.

Worth adding, because the pitcher phase catches people out: households told to filter their water for six months often start using the refrigerator dispenser as the household filter instead of the jug. That triples the duty on a cartridge that was sized for ordinary use, so the interval — not the sealed system — becomes the real service question for the rest of the year.

What a visit settles

If cubes are still hollow after a clean flush and a new cartridge, the remaining question is fill volume, and that gets measured rather than guessed. We time a fill into a marked container, check the inlet screen, test the valve for both coil resistance and actual flow under pressure, and only then look at the mould and its thermostat. That order matters, because three of those four checks are cheap and the fourth is not.

Follow-up questions

Denver Water has replaced my lead service line. Should I change the refrigerator filter?

Yes, and earlier than the date printed on it. The shutdown and re-pressurisation pushes loose scale and rust down the branch, and the cartridge is the first thing fine enough to catch it. Flush a wide cold tap until it runs clear, then fit a fresh cartridge and run water through the dispenser until it stops carrying colour or air.

How long after the street work do ice problems usually appear?

Rarely within the first twenty-four hours, which is why the two events get filed separately. The cartridge absorbs the first of the debris, so the cabinet behaves for several days and then starts producing short, hollow or fused cubes in the following week. If your ice changed within a fortnight of work on your street, treat the supply as the prime suspect before the module.

The crew worked on a neighbour's house in Capitol Hill, not mine. Can that still matter?

It can. A main-side repair or a replacement further along the block disturbs the same water and re-pressurises the same run, and the older Denver grids are dense enough that one job touches a row of houses. If your supply went off and came back for any reason at all, the flush-and-cartridge sequence is worth doing before anything is diagnosed as broken.
