Noise · Denver
Why can I feel it vibrate through the cabinets?
The short answer
A built-in sits inside a run of cabinets, so anything touching it becomes part of the sound. The manufacturer lists vibration among ordinary noises, louder in open-plan rooms. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver checks contact first — (303) 729-0972.

Before you call
- Put a hand on the worktop, then on the door of the next cabinet along. Where the buzz is strongest is where the contact is.
- Take everything off the top of the run. Trays, boards and bottles resting against the cabinet pass vibration straight into the joinery.
- Look for a clear gap all the way round the grille and the door, since anything jammed into it will transmit.
- Check the floor in front is solid underfoot. A springy board under a heavy cabinet turns a small vibration into a felt one.
Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the vibration stays after everything touching the cabinet has been moved clear.
What it usually turns out to be
-
Contact with the joinery
You can stop it by pressing a cabinet door or lifting something off the top, and it comes straight back when you let go.

-
A grille not sitting tight
The buzz is up at the top of the appliance and changes the moment a hand goes flat on the panel.
Quoted after the diagnosis
-
A fan motor out of balance
The vibration keeps to a steady note, it rides with the running cycle, and no amount of moving things about touches it.
Evaporator or condenser fan motor$320–$740
-
A cabinet sitting unevenly
The appliance rocks very slightly under a push at one corner, and the door swings shut or open on its own.

When it is worth a visit
If nothing you move changes it, the vibration is being made inside the appliance rather than passed through the kitchen, and a technician needs to feel it. Levelling a built-in inside its opening is not an owner job, and it is not done by shoving the cabinet.
Feel your way round the run
Vibration is the one symptom on this site that is often not about the appliance at all. A heavy cabinet with a motor in it, screwed into a fitted run, shares everything it does with the worktop above and the units either side. Change the contact and you change the symptom, which is a diagnosis an owner can do with two hands and five minutes.
Work outwards from the appliance. Clear the top of the run, open and hold each neighbouring door in turn, press the grille, press the worktop. Anything that makes the buzz stop or jump has just told you where the energy is going.
What is left after that is genuinely inside: a fan out of balance, or a cabinet that has never sat quite square in its opening since the day it went in.
Follow-up questions
Why can I feel it but barely hear it?
Because the joinery is doing the work. A cabinet built into a run of units is coupled to the worktop and the doors either side, and those surfaces move at frequencies you feel through your hand rather than hear across the room.
Can I pack something behind the appliance to stop it?
Please do not. Anything pushed into the gap behind a built-in ends up in the air path the condenser needs, and a noise problem becomes a heat problem. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver would far rather find the contact point than find a folded towel.
Does vibration mean the compressor is failing?
Not on the evidence of vibration alone. The manufacturer lists vibration among the ordinary noises and points at fan motors before anything deeper, so the order of checking is contact, then the grille, then the fans. The sealed side is the last suspect, not the first.

Still doing it after the checks?
Say what changed and in what order, and the technician packs for that fault rather than for a guess. Technicians work 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, any day of the week, and the line takes a call 24/7.
