What is rattling behind the top grille?

The short answer

A grille is a removable panel, and one that is not sitting properly in its fixings will chatter against the cabinet whenever the fan runs. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver starts there before opening anything — (303) 729-0972.

A tall cabinet in light oak joinery with its upper grille hinged open on a dusty machine compartment, a blanket over the door edge holding a red multimeter, a soft brush and two nut drivers, and the food shelves lit behind the open door at the right. Labelled on the photograph: upper grille, hinged open, machine compartment, meter and brush.

Before you call

  1. Press the flat of your hand against the grille while it is rattling. A rattle that dies under light pressure is the panel.
  2. Look along the bottom edge of the grille for a fixing screw that has backed out or gone missing altogether.
  3. Check the grille sits square in its opening, with no gap along one side and no bow in the middle.
  4. Open all the doors and listen again. If the rattle goes with the doors open, it is a fan inside and not the grille.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the rattle is still there with the grille pressed flat and its fixings sound.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A grille not fully seated

It rattles when the fan below it runs, it quietens under a hand, and the sound is right at the top of the cabinet.

  • A missing or slack fixing

One corner of the panel lifts when you pull gently on it, and the noise follows whichever side has gone loose.

  • A fan blade catching its shroud

The rattle is regular, it rides with the running cycle, and it carries on even with the grille held still.

  • Something resting on the cabinet

A tray, a bottle or a spare shelf left on top of the joinery picks up the vibration and rattles in sympathy.

When it is worth a visit

If the panel is sound and the noise carries on, the manufacturer's own troubleshooting stops there and hands it to a technician. Say whether the rattle rides with the running cycle or comes and goes, because that is what decides which part gets looked at first.

Why a panel makes so much noise

Behind the grille there is moving air, a coil and a fan, and in front of it there is a flat sheet of metal with a kitchen either side of it. That sheet is the loudest thing in the assembly if it is not held tight, because it has surface area and the cabinets around it act as a sounding board.

How the panel is held depends on which generation of cabinet you have. Some are sprung at the back and pinned with a screw at the bottom; on others it is the whole grille assembly that has to be attached correctly. The instruction is the same either way — confirm the grille is properly fixed before suspecting anything behind.

That is also why the door test matters here. A fan inside the food compartment goes quiet when its door opens; a grille at the top does not care.

Follow-up questions

Can I just take the grille off myself?

You can look at how it sits without removing anything. Lifting a grille out and refitting it is where people bend the fins on the coil behind, and Sub-Zero is clear that those fins must not be damaged. Pressing and looking tells you most of what you need.

Does a rattling grille do any harm?

Left alone, a panel loose in its fixings works itself looser, and it stops closing the opening it is there to close. It is a small job while it is still only a rattle. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver picks it up on any visit about noise.

The rattle only happens sometimes — is that normal?

That fits a panel rather than a part. A grille rattles when whatever runs behind it hits the frequency that shakes it, so the noise comes and goes with the cycle and with how full the appliance is. A failing part is steadier than that.
