Why does everything get freezer burn so fast?

The short answer

Because air is getting at the food. Frost on the surface of a steak is water that left the steak, and it leaves faster when a door sits ajar, a seal has torn, or the wrapping is loose. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver — (303) 729-0972.

Before you call

  1. Open and shut the freezer and watch the seal meet the frame. A drawer or a basket standing proud will hold it off.
  2. Go round the gasket looking for rips, tears and dry rot. Sub-Zero names all three as reasons to replace it.
  3. Check the panel reads the freezer figure Sub-Zero publishes, which is zero degrees Fahrenheit on an electronic control.
  4. Look at the wrapping itself. Anything in a bag with air trapped in it is feeding the frost from inside the bag.

Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the seal is sound, the door shuts cleanly and the frost keeps returning on wrapped food.

What it usually turns out to be

  • A door that never quite shuts

A basket, a bag or a box is holding it off the frame, and Sub-Zero lists a freezer door left ajar among the causes of ice in there.

  • A gasket gone hard

The rubber has torn at a corner or dried out along an edge, so the seal that should hold the room out holds nothing.

    Door gasket or seal replacement$260–$700

  • Packaging that was never sealed

Only the unwrapped and the loosely bagged items are marked, everything vacuum-packed beside them is perfect, and the freezer itself is running where it should.

When it is worth a visit

If the wrapping is tight, the door closes onto a sound seal and food is still going pale and dry, something is moving more air across it than it should, or the defrost side is not behaving — Sub-Zero names a defrost failure among the causes of ice in a freezer. That is a visit.

Where the frost in the bag comes from

Open a bag of freezer-burned chicken and there is ice on the inside of the plastic and a pale, dry patch on the meat underneath. Those two things are the same water. It left the food, crossed the air gap, and settled on the inside of the bag.

That transfer never stops in a freezer. What changes the rate is air: how much of it is in the packet, how much of it moves past the food, and how much room air keeps arriving through a door that is not shut. Sub-Zero puts a door left ajar and a torn gasket at the top of its own list of reasons a freezer ices up, and they are worth ruling out before anything else.

Which is why the first pass is all mechanical. Shut the door properly, get the seal checked, squeeze the air out of the bag. Only then is the cabinet worth suspecting.

Follow-up questions

Does freezer burn mean my freezer is failing?

Not on its own. A patch of pale, dry frost on one unwrapped item beside a dozen perfectly good vacuum packs is a packaging story. It becomes the cabinet's problem when everything is marked, wrapped and unwrapped alike, and the seal or the door is the reason.

Can I just replace the gasket myself?

The manufacturer puts gasket work on the technician, for both doors and drawers, rather than on the owner. A seal that goes back in twisted holds no better than the torn one it replaced, which is why it is worth a booking. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver takes those on (303) 729-0972.

Does the dry air in Denver make it worse?

Not inside a closed cabinet — the freezer's air is its own. Where it does bite is the counter and the sink: an unwrapped joint left out here loses surface moisture quickly before it ever goes in, and it goes into the freezer already half dried.

Talk to someone

Still doing it after the checks?

Say what changed and in what order, and the technician packs for that fault rather than for a guess. Technicians work 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, any day of the week, and the line takes a call 24/7.
