Frost and ice · Denver
Why is the freezer drawer frozen shut?
The short answer
Because ice has built up where the drawer meets the cabinet — in the runners, along the seal, on the floor beneath it — and frozen the two together. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver thaws it properly and then finds what made the ice — (303) 729-0972.
$89 service call, credited against the repair.
Before you call
- Stop pulling. A drawer iced into its runners will bring the front, the rails or the gasket with it before the ice gives.
- Switch the section off at the control panel and leave it, food moved to a cool box, until the ice releases on its own.
- No hairdryer, no heat gun, no kettle, no blade. The liner is brittle at this temperature and the tubing behind it punctures.
- Once it opens, dry everything and look at the gasket for a tear or a stretch binding against the frame.
Stop here and call Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 if the drawer ices shut again after a full defrost, or will not open at all.
What it usually turns out to be
-
Ice on the compartment floor
Meltwater is refreezing on its way out instead of draining, and the pool it forms is exactly where the drawer sits down.
Quoted after the diagnosis
-
A gasket binding or torn
The drawer never quite sealed, so moist air arrived all day and froze at the coldest edge, which is the one it closes against.
Door gasket or seal replacement$260–$700
-
Defrost that has stopped running
Ice is not just at the front but across the rear panel too, and it returns on the same interval however carefully the drawer is closed.
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor$280–$680
When it is worth a visit
Call once the drawer has iced shut twice, or once it will not free itself after the section has been off for several hours. Repeat freezing at the runners is a defrost or drain answer, and forcing the drawer in the meantime costs a front and a rail set.
What the ice at the front is made of
Nothing in a freezer produces water at the drawer edge. It gets there one of two ways: it arrived as vapour in room air and froze on the first cold surface, or it was melted off the evaporator by the defrost cycle and refroze before it reached the drain. Which one it is decides whether the answer is a seal or a circuit.
Follow-up questions
How long before a frozen drawer lets go?
Sub-Zero puts a full manual defrost at several hours with the section switched off and the cabinet open, and asks for another day before the temperature settles. A drawer stuck at the runners alone often releases sooner than that, but nothing is gained by testing it every ten minutes.
Can I put warm water on the ice?
A cloth wrung out in warm water, laid on and left, is as far as it should go. Poured water finds the runners and the drain and refreezes lower down, which turns one stuck drawer into a blocked drain path and a wetter problem than you started with.
What gets checked on the visit?
The seal, the runners and the compartment floor first, then the defrost side. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Denver wants to know whether the ice forms where the drawer closes or across the whole compartment, because those two point at different parts and only one of them needs the rear panel off.
